The sacral chakra, or what some have deemed the “sex chakra”, focuses primarily on your creativity, sensuality, sexuality, and self-expression. Located just below the navel and inner pelvis, this second chakra called svadhistana is associated with the color orange and the element of water.
The six-petalled lotus flower is the sacral chakra symbol that represents the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth. Some even claim the tangential circles showcase a crescent moon, which connects the different phases of the moon with the flowing tides of water.
In order to be in total balance, our 7 primary energy chakras must be open and aligned. So, if you feel a loss of pleasure, creativity, or libido, your sacral chakra may need balance and healing.
What is the sacral chakra responsible for?
Parvati, the Hindu goddess of fertility and power, is believed to govern the sacral chakra. Combined with the element of water, the sacral chakra is all about freedom of expression, pleasure, sensuality, creativity, and enjoyment.
When the sacral chakra is in balance, you can expect to go with the flow and to feel in harmony with yourself and others. It enhances our creative juices, intuition, and sexual expression.
It is the center of our emotions, so be prepared to connect with deep feelings when working with this chakra. Once fully aligned, you’ll be able to express your wants, needs, desires, and emotions with yourself and others. Thus, allowing strong and healthy relationships.
The sacral chakra awakening symptoms
Once you spark your creative energy and get your flow moving again, you may experience:
- A deep emotional connection to your inner child
- Enhanced creativity and self-expression
- More sexual intimacy and expression
- A connection with the divine feminine
There is a fine line between an underbalanced chakra and an over-balanced chakra. Pay close attention to your emotions, as they may consume you in a negative way. An underbalanced or blocked sacral chakra may result in codependent behaviors, a total lack of sex, and difficulty expressing yourself. Alternatively, an overactive chakra can lead to high and low mood swings, negative or manipulative behavior, a loss of control, and feelings of overwhelm.
How to unblock and heal the sacral chakra
There are plenty of ways to heal and restore your energy chakras. Here are some of my favorite methods.
Reflect and Meditate
While you get in touch with your deepest self, visualize the color orange as it fills you up with creative and sensual energy. Focus on your breath and take time to reflect on your emotions. The more in tune you can be with yourself, the more balanced your energy centers will become.
Movement through Yoga
Since this chakra is positioned at our core, yoga postures that focus on the hips and lower abs are a great way to connect with your energy centers. Try hip-openers like happy baby, garland pose, camel pose, or pigeon pose.
Affirmations for the Sacral Chakra
Another great way to awaken your chakra is through positive daily affirmations. These short, empowering statements can deeply connect you with your inner self.
Crystals and Essential Oils
To further enhance your meditation practice, try incorporating essential oils or crystals. Essential oils, such as sandalwood or jasmine, can be used in a bath or applied directly to your skin. Hold or place crystals, like tiger’s eye, citrine, carnelian, or mookalite, around your pelvis area while meditating or carrying it around in your pocket.
Nourishing your body through food
Add in a variety of orange foods, such as carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, butternut squash, and orange citrus, as a nourishing way to heal your body and align with this chakra.
